It is an interesting alternative to Chitwan National Park in spite of the fact that facilities for independent travel are not development to the same extent. It does contain rhinos that were transplanted from Chitwan in the seventies and have multiplied. It's estimated there are now over 70 individuals. There are also better chances of viewing tiger. Wildlife in the park also includes leopard, black bull, spotted deer, barking deer and wild elephant. The park is bounded in the west by Karnali River that contains both ghrial and mugger crocodiles and Gangetic dolphins. As the park is situated in an area affected by the Moist insurgency till 2006, it's better to get latest information before you decide to go there.
Situated at a distance of 585km from the kathmandu and the largest national park in the plains, it is situated in the Terai itself in contrast to Chitwan located in an intermontane valley close to kathmandu visited by a larger number of tourists annually. There are 36 species of mammals and 360 species of birds in the park.
There are a number of tourist class and budget lodges in the park. However many may be closed in 2005 due to insurgency.
