Lapsi, Labsi, Lausi,  (लप्सी, लब्सी, लउसी) - Nepalese Hog Plum Hog plum is a deciduous tree reaching 15–22 metres (49–72 feet) in height. The bark is deeply fissured. The plant typically drops most of its compound leaves before flowering. The drupe fruits are about 4 cm (1.6 inches) in length and have a leathery yellow-green skin. Common Name: Nepalese Hog Plum Botanical Name: Choerosopondias axillaries Roxb. Family: Anacardiaceae Lapsi (also known as labsi or lausi) are a native fruit of Nepal.  The tall subtropical tree can be found growing in many parts of the country.  The fruit is greenish-yellow when ripe and roughly resembles a small oval-shaped plum.  It is extremely sour, even when fully ripe, and has a high vitamin C content.  The fruit has a tough fibrous skin and pale yellow flesh, which is firmly attached to a large brown seed.  The pulp is difficult to separate from the seeds, but once cooked it separates easily.  A ripe lapsi has a pleasantly tart flavor

The Nepalese economy is almost totally dependent on foreign labor sending money to their families in Nepal. Everyday there are hundreds of low skilled workers going abroad mostly to the Arab countries and Malaysia but also recently to South Korea. 

One day, I happened to see a huge long line of people and police gathered. I inquired an officer who told me that they are waiting in line to get application forms for Korean employment. Basically South Korea hires about 5,000 Nepalese every year of which they get about 20,000 to 30,000 Nepalese applicants. The applicants are then tested for Korean language exam and those who pass the exam are eligible for employment opportunities in South Korea.
