The Secret of the Successful "Socialist" Sweden

Image
Whenever I get engaged in a debate where I argue that mixed economies, although very promising in theory, get too mixed up too work, I invariably face a statement similar to this: "But look at the Scandinavian countries, especially Sweden. Mixed economy and welfare state is working so well there and in fact  doing better than the free market economies." Well, Sweden seems to be the ultimate example of the promise of welfare state. But is it really? When a well-functioning and sustainable welfare state seems to elude every nation around the  world, Sweden seems to have turned into reality all the rosy promises offered by socialists. What's the secret of the successful socialist Sweden? Institute of Economic Affairs has recently published a discussion paper by the Swedish author Nima Sanandaji which has tried to explain the secret. The discussion paper entitled "The surprising ingredients of Swedish success – free markets and social cohesion" makes a few points a...

A New Day in Nepal

GUFA GUFFAW:  Media Gufa participants share a light moment Something rare and wonderful has just concluded in Kathmandu. Deep in the bowels of the Hotel Mandap (The Little Hotel that Could), Nepalis came together. Dharma Adhikari's Media Foundation held a "New Media Gufa"  or "cave" where 5 of Nepal's top tech-savvy journalists chained themselves to their computers for three days in a heroic attempt to determine the extent of internet penetration in Nepal and to see if Nepali stories could be accurately told and sourced through the conveniences and limitations of the internet alone.  It was a beautifully conceived and elegantly simple plan and its execution was wondrous. Competing journalists talked and worked together as colleagues; debated, shared ideas and source information; and all was well and good until: A National Conversation Happened First, let's back up a bit: Up until this event, with the exception of an exceptional few, Nepal's journali...

Speechless

Image
I have no words. I once read t his story in the New Vision , and I heard a call to make a social action documentary, about how the government of Uganda ignores certain diseases, and focuses on diseases that donors say it should focus on. They pour money into TB, AIDS, Malaria, and now on maternal health - and yet being pregnant is not even a disease! It's 100% natural, but (okay, that's for another story) - there are sicknesses that are killing Ugandans, and no one is doing anything about it. Like DMD, duchenne muscular dystrophy, a terrible killer. It's sad to see a young life wasted, reduced to waiting for the grim reaper. I visited this family in Wakiso district, and spent a day with them. I am hoping to convince a physiotherapist to visit the family and train them on how to care for their sick children, but this case makes me speechless. I do not know if I have the heart to make this film. Three children have already died in the family. One boy is suffering from advance...
