Things to Do Before You Come to Nepal

Image
Coming to Nepal for the first time? There is so much to consider prior to leaving it can almost make you dizzy. Then, when you get to Nepal you will undoubtedly wish you would have or wouldn’t have done this or that. How can you possibly know in advance? Here are a few things you will want to do before you leave home, based upon my living here for more than 3 years. This list is taken from my eBook, Nepal: A Tourist’s Manual. Of course no one will do all of these suggestions, but they will get you to think about this from a bit of a different view. Things to do before you come to Nepal : 1. Scan the receipt of any jewelry you will be bringing with you. You can email it to yourself or save it on a pen drive. If you get into financial trouble you can borrow against it instead of having to pay Western Union rates to get money in a time of crisis. It happens. If it gets stolen you will find the picture and receipt helpful, as well. 2. Get an international drivers’ license...

Adjusting ‘Chill Out’ Kathmandu Nepal | Time Factor

Image
Time-it’s the West’s favorite measuring device. Time-something Nepali have a vague understanding of.   This, in my opinion, is the biggest issue for Westerners to get a hold of when visiting Nepal.   If you are not in total harmony of the irrelevance of time in Nepal you will be frustrated each day you are here until you leave. In retrospect, you will process it as a country that just didn’t work for you.  To a tourist, you may feel like you have to hurry up just so you can wait and that doesn’t feel good. It feels like disrespect. To the Nepali, he shows up and seems to expect you to be proud of him for doing that much.  First, be diligent about the time issue. It’s important to us and it is a tool that will either spell success or failure back home. If you stay here too long you may just make everyone crazy for a while when you show up on ‘Nepali time'-20 minutes late.  So, dealing with this issue is easy if you will just remember a ...

The Great Escape-From Motherhood

This blog post will inspire retired women to come to Nepal. This is my first long term guest to come to my 'Senior Gap Year' Project: . . . "The day my dear husband died was the day I picked my life back up and began to live, but I clung to the love of these three souls hoping as they matured they would each appreciate and love me like I had loved them. Obviously that didn’t happen and it’s really fine that this is the way it was for me. Had it not been for the independent nature that I had instilled in them I know I would still be living my life for them, and waiting for grandchildren, and taking menial work so I could manage the hours in case someone needed me. I’ve seen it happen to plenty of my girlfriends. . . " Keep reading: http://usexpatinnepal.blogspot.com/2014/05/the-great-escape-from-motherhood.html Did you know I wrote an eBook filled with tips on getting the most out of your visit to Nepal? NTC Nepal WIMAX internet review -Update

Image
Update- Just an update to my previous post on WIMAX internet review .  The internet speed depends on the time of the day and during the afternoons the performance seems to suffer a bit. The upload speeds specially suffer and see below screen shot for the poor upload speed.  Internet speed for upload is bit slow Voice Communication Skype: I ran a few Skype call tests by calling overseas and the results were good when the internet was running fine, however when calling from skype during peak internet traffic times such as afternoons results in the other person not hearing you. This is a frustrating as NTC's ADSL internet doesnt seem to suffer from such performance issues in skype. Viber: In addition to skype, I also tested calls using Viber and the results were much improved. Viber being less resource intensive compared to skype it makes sense to use it in Nepal specially when calling overseas.

Surprises in Nepal

Image
Everyone knows trekking is the best on the planet in Nepal. It’s a great, cheap destination for people wanting to travel on a budget, volunteer, do spiritual retreats, etc. But there are a few surprises that I hope will put Nepal on the radar for you. Knowing what to expect will help you find your way around obstacles so you to enjoy Nepal more. One of the first things I saw after arriving in Nepal was how many military personnel there were standing around just about everywhere I looked. They were in full combat gear, including SWAT shields and riffles. Being from the US, this was a disconcerting sight for me. They just looked like they were waiting for trouble to erupt. That was in December 2010 and as far as I know they are still waiting because I haven’t noticed much trouble.  Nepal has come through some difficult times in the past decade or so, which brought a civil war and Maoists getting into power. They made a lot of promises, but it seems the people chose a more mild g...
