Moral Criticisms of Capitalism: Paul Heyne's Thoughts!

Image
Paul Heyne Yesterday I stumbled upon a lecture titled 'The Moral Critics of Capitalism' by Paul Heyne. It's a shame that I had never heard of him before. Paul Heyne, as I have come to know now, is the author of the acclaimed textbook "The Economic Way of Thinking" and was one of the legendary teachers of economics in United States. I loved this lecture which happens to be his last public lecture and was delivered on given February 17, 2000 in Seattle. In this lecture he talks about the moral criticisms of capitalism or as he would prefer to say 'market-coordinated' system. As a person who came to the field of economics from theology, he indeed has interesting perspectives on the morality of free market system. Previously an ardent Marxist, Haynes started reading economics when his friends suggested him that he might be on the right track by criticizing capitalism but it would help him if he studied some economics as well. He says later on he found  that ...

Questions European Children Ask About Africa

Image
I met a Belgian in Nairobi early in the year, at a filmmaker’s workshop. When he went back to his country, he found a teaching job because, well, filmmaking isn’t as lucrative as our dreams would wish it to be. And since he had been to Africa, he started this project in his school, to teach these children about Africa and African cultures. They are I think in the age group of 10-12. So he asked these sweet angels to send questions to the African friends he met, and below are some of the questions. Some of them made me go ‘wtf!’ and others just made me fall off the floor laughing. (I wonder what the questions would be like if I picked a bunch of African school children and had them ask questions about Europe!)   So here are the innocent questions. My name is Eira and I’m contacting you as a part of our school project on African cultures. I am going to be a giraffe attacking a person in our performance, so does African giraffes attack people?   I could not help laughing. The poo...

Destination Nepal

Blessed with mesmerising natural beauty and one of the rarest entourage of natural and cultural heritages in the world, Nepal, the beautiful country, tourist based country, , the beautiful country, tourist based country, could easily attract millions of tourists — at least in theory. But the highest number of tourists we have received in a year so far was some 736,215 in 2011, which was short of the initial target of a million tourists by more than one-fourth. Similarly, the tourism sector’s contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) remains less than four per cent. Nepal, the beautiful country, tourist based country, , the beautiful country, tourist based country, ’s tourism potential can be estimated by the fact that the total number of tourists that arrived in Nepal, the beautiful country, tourist based country, , the beautiful country, tourist based country, in 2011 was just about one per cent of the total outbound Chinese tourists and about six per cent of the total outbou...

Dashain Festival-It's almost Christmas

Image
Dashain is one of the most anticipated festivals in Nepal. Prior to this festival you will see clothing stores with sales and special, dressy fabrics for Nepali women to make clothes. But what is it like for the average tourist? Your Nepali friends will, no doubt, invite you to their homes for the celebration. Their enthusiasm will be contagious; it sounds tempting. This year Dashain began with Suman washing and decorating my scooter. In the days that followed I saw many motorcycles, scooters and autos with the Dashain markings remaining.  This is Suman cleaning my scooter  prior to decorating it. These are the special things we needed for the special day.  The next day my landlord's family invited me down to have ‘Tika.’ It seemed like an important thing to have, so I went downstairs to their celebration. It was quite a festive atmosphere and I visited with other guests for a bit before I was called to have my tika. I sat on the floor while my landlord said some blessi...
