VIANET is the Fastest, affordable, reliable home internet in Nepal

Image
The consumer choices and quality for internet thats available in Kathmandu, Nepal has improved a lot. Whereas in the past this market was dominated by NTC and WLink, nowadays there are a lot of choices such as Vianet, Subisu, Ncell.  I tried out Subisu's home cable internet and found it was quite good but I didn't get to test it for longer periods of time. I have also tested NTC's adsl and Wimax. NTC service seems to be good in during the morning and afternoon time but during the evenings the slow to a crawl. This shows the speed to their local servers in Kathmandu I had the opportunity to try out VIANET for 1 whole month and can say they provide one of the best internet quality with speed. All the setup and cabling is done by them for free during signup. They have a fiber optic network so its the best quality speed you will get compared to ADSL or Wireless services provided by other companies.  Tests on Browsing websites, Videos, On-line gaming and VOIP communication I was...

CAN Info Tech is Nepal's biggest IT and electronics fair. You could probably say CAN Info tech is the CES of Nepal. This years fair was from Jan 29 to Feb 3, 2016. The event was organized by the Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) Federation with an objective to promote IT and provide a common platform for all IT enthusiasts. Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Biswo Ram Balamai, general secretary of CAN Federation, said that the expo would feature a total of 175 stalls — 49 stalls inside the main hall, three branding pavilions outside, 104 stalls in the truss, 14 stalls in open area, and five food stalls. “All the stalls in the main hall have already been booked. Similarly, more than 90 percent of the stalls under the truss have been booked,” added Balami. Dentists in Nepal

In Nepal its very hard to find a good dentist because there are so many choices available and and most of them are targeting lower income people. For an average working or middle class person the best way to find a good dentist for your tooth problems is by asking others for recommendations. Ask family, friends, neighbors or coworkers what they like about their dentist. You also may wish to go on the internet and search local dentists in Kathmandu and by their website and looking where they studied, the services they provide. There are 3 types of dental clinics in Nepal. a - Basic These dentists do the bare minimum work and will charge you very low fees. However their standard of care and work may be low as well. Most people who visit them are low income, villagers and the poor who cannot afford to spend much on dental work. b - Average People who visit the average clinics are white collared working and office workers, middle class people. These dentists do a decent job at a decent ...

CIP Room Service in Nepal's Airport

Image
The picture is a bit funny If you are ever in Nepal's international airport and want to live the high life try out the CIP (Commercially Important Person ) Room Service. Whatever that means, I'm confused. The TIA Airports website describes CIP as follows "Available by reservation for business travelers. This is available for Commercially important person who on arrival may wish to rest while someone takes care of their formalities i.e. custom, immigration and collecting of the luggage. You can avail this room after paying Rs 200 per person." The price sounds not bad. I have never tried this service but perhaps I need to try it out next time.

Best affordable GYM in Kathmandu

Image
Working out even if its a little bit is a must for a healthy body and mind. Since Kathmandu is covered in dust most of the times and the roads are not jogging or exercise friendly its better to join a GYM. I tried out a local GYM in Baudha. I cant remember the name of the GYM but its next door to Bhatbhateni -Baudha and few minutes walk from the Hyatt Hotel.  Kathmandu GYM Membership is very affordable only RS 1000 monthly and the equipments are good enough. There is shower and locker facility included. There's even a Sauna room, you pay extra for that.  See pictures and judge for yourself. If you would like more information, leave a comment and I will reply back to you. Workout facilities

Baudhanath Stupa Kathmandu reviewed

Image
Om Mani Pema Hu Baudha Stupa is one of the most holy places of worship for Buddhists in Nepal. Every year hundreds and thousands of people from all over the world visit this holy place. For tourists this is a must stop place. As per Buddhist traditions, you walk Clock Wise around the Stupa and say your prayers. In addition you can spin the Prayer Wheels as you walk. Baudha Stupa View of the Stupa from one of the restaurants nearby After your walk feel free to stop by the many popular eateries along the Stupa. Some of the good ones are Cafe Aria for coffee and snacks, Road House Cafe for pizza, Galleria for everything else. There are some other ones around too but I dont remember their names. For disclaimer purposes, I have no connection to any of these restaurants places named.

Nepal Driving license exam questions

Here are some of the questions I saw on my test -How do you start a car in the winter ?  (multiple choice question) -What is a Zebra Crossing ?  (multiple choice question) -What is a motor vehicle and name four types ?  (write short answer in few sentences) -What is the law for getting into accident without being in possession of a valid drivers license ?      (multiple choice question) Additionally there were some other multiple choice questions involving traffic symbols such as a Yield, Stop Sign etc. Whatever the case, before you go take your written test, you have to actually read their book. If you know other questions, please leave a comment. If you have not applied for your Nepal Drivers License , read my article on how to. Click here to read more .

In any country getting a driving license is not easy but in Nepal it is a pure nightmare unless you are bored and have plenty of free time. Here are the steps: 1. Goto Department of Transportation in Patan. In case you are not familiar its near Jawalakhel. Previously it used to be in the police department near Singha Durbar. Now you have to go much further just for driving license. The Driving License buildings you need to find 2. Volunteer work in Nepal for a fee or free

Image
While searching on google, for volunteer opportunities in Nepal, I found only a few such opportunities and all of them required some kind of fee (From $200 to 400 weekly). I think its bit ridiculous that you are going to volunteer your work and you have to pay for the pleasure of serving them. A foreign volunteer group goes hiking on the weekend High Unemployment Rate The unemployment rate in Nepal is 47 percent according to Wikipedia. Additionally the economic and political situation in Nepal is shaky. Now since the year 2010, labor unions have come into the picture. Although labor unions are good for workers in the sense that they are for worker rights and decent pay, they are not good in a sense that it makes business owners and management refrain from wanting to hire workers. Labor Unions As a result of union workers in companies in Kathmandu and various cities in Nepal, companies are not allowed to fire or layoff employees as you would expect in a free market country. Worker union...

Dharara the Eifel Tower of Nepal

Image
Dharara probably one of Nepal's oldest and tallest buildings. It can be found in Sundhara Road of Kathmandu. It used to be taller but an earthquake many years ago caused it to lose some of its height. For many years it was closed to the public and only as around 2005 it was opened for public. One can pay the entrance fee and climb the narrow stairs all the way to the top. It is popular for both locals and tourists but honestly not too much to see here. For your viewing pleasure, I have taken some pictures from the top and attached it with this blog post. (See below and click on individual pictures to enlarge) Updated April 28, 2015  Sadly the tower has collapsed. Read my new post on the recent earthquake in Nepal

A review of Nepal's only Zoo- Central Zoo of Kathmandu

Image
Central Zoo of Kathmandu is Nepal's one and only Zoo. I have visited it many times over the few years and was curious to see how its doing. So earlier this year 2013, I paid the RS 100 fee(for nepalis only) and entered. I will let the pictures below describe the condition and the zoo. Overall the good news is things haven't worsened. The bad news is things haven't improved much either.  Definitely the Zoo administration needs to do more to give space to the animals. Looks to be a bit too congested for certain animals that need space. For Nepal this is relatively clean, organized, good. Overall Rating 7 / 10    Boat Rentals available    Children's playground near the animal area. Im sure animals dont appreciate the noise.    The tiger taking a nap.    A leopard in what looks like a Jail cell.    Bears - notice the electric fences inside.    Small birds - don't they need bigger areas ?    S...
